# Ask AI Data Connector

> Ask AI Data Connector is an MCP server and REST API that connects 20+ e-commerce and business data sources (Shopify, Klaviyo, GA4, Meta Ads, Google Ads, Xero, Gorgias and more) to AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, so merchants can ask questions in plain English and get real answers that span every source at once.

## What Ask AI Is
Ask AI is the data-access and interpretation layer between e-commerce systems and AI assistants. It is not an e-commerce platform, not an attribution platform replacing Triple Whale, not a dashboard or data-visualization product, not a replacement for Shopify, GA4 or Klaviyo, not a generic MCP directory, and not an AI model itself. It sits between your connected platforms and the AI assistant so the assistant answers from real, synced, cross-referenced data instead of raw per-source API output.

## The Problem It Solves
Shopify, Klaviyo, GA4 and your ad platforms each answer questions about themselves, not about each other. Ask AI combines 20+ e-commerce and business data sources into a single natural-language query layer, so an AI assistant can analyse relationships between data that normally lives in separate platforms, without you checking each tool separately or exporting anything.

## How Ask AI Handles Data
Ask AI does not proxy a live API call for every question. Each connected source is synced into Ask AI's own database on a recurring schedule (Shopify orders/products/customers, GA4 traffic, ad-platform spend, Klaviyo campaigns, and so on), normalized into a common schema, and stamped with a freshness/staleness signal on every answer.

Cross-source questions are answered by joining that synced data server-side, not by handing the AI raw per-source data and leaving it to reconcile:
- Where a real shared key exists (a Shopify product ID, customer ID, or order ID), Ask AI joins records directly, e.g. matching a review platform's product back to the Shopify product it belongs to, or a Search Console landing page to the product it sells.
- Where no shared key exists (comparing GA4 sessions to ad spend to Shopify revenue, or measuring a Klaviyo campaign's effect), Ask AI compares aggregates over the same time window, or measures lift against a day-of-week-aligned counterfactual baseline (the same days one week earlier) rather than assuming correlation is causation.
- Every answer is labelled with which source is canonical for that metric (e.g. Shopify's own order data for revenue, not a marketing platform's attributed figure) and flagged when a figure is approximate or comes from a less reliable source.

## Why Not Just Connect Individual MCP Servers
Shopify, GA4, Triple Whale and other platforms increasingly offer their own MCP servers. Connecting several of them gives an AI assistant raw access to each source individually, but it still has to reconcile currencies, timezones and conflicting metric definitions itself, and cannot join data across sources unless a tool already returns a joined answer. Ask AI's tools return pre-joined, source-labelled results (see "How Ask AI Handles Data" above), so the assistant gets an already-reconciled cross-source answer instead of several disconnected raw datasets to interpret itself.

## Cross-Source Analysis (The Key Differentiator)

2. Connect data sources (API keys or OAuth), which takes under 5 minutes
3. Add the MCP connector to Claude (Settings, then Connectors, then Add Custom Connector, then paste the MCP URL), or create a Custom GPT in ChatGPT, or use the REST API with any AI tool
4. Ask questions in natural language about their business data, including questions that cross multiple data sources

## Limitations (Read-Only By Design)
Ask AI never modifies data in connected tools. It cannot change Shopify prices, inventory or product listings; cannot launch, pause or edit ad campaigns; cannot send Klaviyo campaigns or flows; cannot issue refunds; and cannot change settings in any connected platform. It answers questions and surfaces findings; a human still takes any resulting action. Credentials are AES-256-GCM encrypted at rest, and any connected source can be disconnected at any time.
